As you say they won't be needing them for modelling the climate, so that frees up computing time for other needs so speed isn't anywhere near as important. The complexity of modelling the climate is such that now that climate change no longer exists in America, they probably have more processing capacity they actually need these days. A clear and obvious benefit of the Trump presidency.
